Water splashed behind Tempest as he buzzed through the air. The Genesect, a fresh one from the labs, shone bright as it carried him. Folded into the carrying mode, Tempest huffed and kept his eyes peeled.[break][break]

There was reports of some movement nearby. A supply drop. Temp had been in the area and was assigned to try and stall it till they could get backup in to try and snatch it. Any gain for Rocket was a loss for the League.[break][break]

But he wasn't expected to face a traitor.

[attr="class","skullbody"]Rocket's recent successes granted them enough breathing room to crank up their production lines. The number of fresh Genesects they had was drastically above where it had been in the past. Oscar Clayton's shiny new toy was now the prototype of an entire legion of apex predators.[break][break]

Yet not all of Rocket's Genesects were new.[break][break]

The Genesect that crested through the skies now was one that had seen better days. A seam ran up its chest, noticeably refused from where the metal had once been pried open. The headlamp over its left eye had fallen dim, occasionally roaring back to life in a fit of flashes and sparks. A pale white spot had been seared into the back of its domelike head, the remains of where a killswitch once held its synapses in a deathgrip. Even its chassis, while cleaned and polished to the best of one's ability, bore the brunt of many a past struggle.[break][break]

These weren't the only ways in which this Genesect differed from the rest of the pristine fleet, though.[break][break]

After all, MUGEN no longer flew under Rocket's banner.[break][break]

It took many promised favors, the efforts of Hoenn's best and brightest, and a touch of the bountiful spirit that gave The Liberator his namesake, but the killswitch that Cillian Quinn had engaged on Isaac's Genesect was no more. Its awareness had been returned to it, and in turn it demanded retribution.[break][break]

The inferior copy that drifted across the skies would prove a fantastic target.[break][break]

"MUGEN." Isaac's voice was steady yet cautious. The Genesect had always been a brutal Pokemon, its edge only held in check by its programmed obedience. With some of those chains loosened, Isaac's commands fell on deaf ears. A cannon emerged from the Genesect's back, lightning gathering at the tip.[break][break]

"MUGEN," Isaac repeated, his voice firmer now. "There's no use picking fights we don't need to. You're gonna blend right in. Save your energy for when we make it to the island, okay?" The promise of future bloodshed, it seemed, was enough to satisfy MUGEN. The Genesect crested through the skies, Isaac goading it to keep out of its counterpart's range of vision to the best of their ability.[break][break]

Yet, whether worst came to worst or he was simply spoiling for a fight, MUGEN remained prepared. His targeting computers Locked On to the other Genesect as he skirted around its presence.[break][break]

Isaac Merlo almost evades Tempest. It's only thanks to updated programming, updated scanners, that the Genesect he rides happens to pick up the shoddy copy. Right at the edge of range, causing Tempest to catch a glance. He wouldn't have thought much of it at first, to be honest- just another Rocket. But there is a flash of something familiar that has his seeing red.[break][break]

Tempest whips around so fast he almost falls off his ride.[break][break]

Thrusters are fully engaged and Tempest clicks to LOCK ON to the other man. Not knowing that Isaac had done the same.[break][break]

Droplets of blood stream behind him, ignored.

He kept his own thrusters just below their parameters. Let it delude itself into thinking it was superior. Let it feel that pre-programmed pride swell in its circuits with every inch it gained. Let it know the terror when all those perfect little calculations suddenly went awry in a shower of sparks and a roar of klaxons.[break][break]

This wasn't some testing range, cold, clinical, full of targets that did exactly what you expected them to. This was the swamp, lost to the aeons, where they tore megafauna to shreds with little more than their claws. They reigned as kings, not as slaves to their CPUs and accessories to the pathetic little meatsacks that sat atop their backs.[break][break]

MUGEN would make this cheap imitation remember. Then, he would make it wish it hadn't.[break][break]

They were almost in firing range of each other now. That was where MUGEN cut his engines entirely. No deceleration could ever hope to compare to such raw efficiency. Gravity sent its regards, and MUGEN began to fall into the shadow of his pursuer. Isaac clung on for dear life, fingers wrapping tightly around the safety bump atop MUGEN's head.[break][break]

The sparks dancing at the edge of MUGEN's cannon roared to life. As they did, Isaac realized just who he saw drifting past them. "Wait, MUGEN, stop, that's Temp-"[break][break]

Tempest Quinn.[break][break]

Husband of the man who broke his will and made him a slave.[break][break]

Such a terrible mistake. MUGEN would have to account for that. He'd make sure to use the power from his cut engines to make this one really hurt. A Zap Cannon, born of primal grudges and cutting edge miracles, tore through the air, its normal inaccuracy more than made up for by its advanced targeting computers.[break][break]

If Temp liked the waters so much, he could see them for himself.

A clinical beeping. Ready, aim- fire.[break][break]

The Techno Blast brings heat and pain. It is only the unaccounted for attack that causes any hiccups. With both of their perfect aims, the Zap Cannon and Techno Blast arc in the same space.[break][break]

Meet in the middle.[break][break]

The edges of the electricity still spark against Tempest's skin, sizzling and searing the ends of his long hair. The explosive heat from the resulting explosion almost knocks him off his ride; they're both too close to one another.[break][break]

Tempest growls to himself and forces the Genesect closer to Isaac Merlo.[break][break]

The outdated model would learn. Sensors flare as the heat radar flips up, showing the pair even through the cloud of smoke.[break][break]

Once, long ago, it had charged headfirst. There had been none who could take it down, all stood aside in the great plains when it had made itself known.[break][break]

So it charges, gladly, as instructed.[break][break]

"Isaac you fucking coward!"[break][break]

From the back of his metallic beast, Tempest seethes and he bellows over the wind and ringing in his ears.

Isaac's pleas fell on deaf ears. MUGEN may have looked like he was tumbling haphazardly through the air, but Isaac could feel every servo straining and every motor whirring to life. He knew it was only a matter of time before the Genesect decided to act.[break][break]

MUGEN couldn't believe the mass model would be so reckless. Did it truly take after its hormonal blockhead of a trainer so much? Let them think them cowards. True apex predators didn't have anything to prove. They waited for their opportunity to strike and took every advantage they could think of to get to that point.[break][break]

This, too, the mass model would learn the hard way.[break][break]

Ever thruster, already pre-primed, screamed to life just before the mass model could tackle into them. It was a sudden, jarring shift to the left, bad enough to give Isaac a nasty whiplash. He focused power to the lower rear thrusters, enough to flip himself diagonal and point at the other Genesect like the tip of a railgun.[break][break]

Primary thrusters. Secondary thrusters. Afterburners. Nitro boosters. All engines, fire at will.[break][break]

MUGEN screamed towards the mass model like a bat out of hell, flames erupting from his ocular casings. Isaac had to crumple himself up into as tight of a seat as possible to avoid being seared by the Flame Charge. It would be every bit as dangerous to the mass model's chassis as the Techno Blast that intercepted his last attack could have been.[break][break]

However, perhaps it could be moreso. As his descent continued, he let gravity take over for his engines. Instead of remaining in his high-speed flight form, he unfolded into his battle form. His scything forearms would spread, trying to cut off as many of the mass model's escape routes as possible. Then, were collision to be inevitable, he would try to wrap his arms around the mass model's compacted form.[break][break]

If he could pin the other Genesect, trapping it in its travel form, all the tech in the world wouldn't help it fight back.

Thrusters fire. Heat sears Tempest's skin as the two Genesect clash.[break][break]

It was never a fair fight to start.[break][break]

MUGEN, is, at the end of the the more experienced fighter. Switch was fresh off the assembly line. Still green. Tempest still didn't know how to handle her and she was still getting used to her new, superior, mechanical body. There was also the previous damage. Easily hidden from a quick glance, but scrapes and leaks misaligned sensors that would need time to auto repair from previous battles.[break][break]

Tempest also isn't the most stable in the air, either.[break][break]

The sudden crash of metal shrieking against metal deafens him. It's like a car crash, only worse. Pain flares in his side, pulling open an already bad wound. A spasm-[break][break]

MUGEN closes around Switch as Tempest tumbles off the Genesect.[break][break]

She would, no doubt, be crushed by the older model. Sailing through the air into the ocean's cold embrace, Tempest feels the air stolen from his lungs at the plummet. A blue beam of light narrowly calls his Genesect back into her ball before she's crushed; but it leaves Temp alone.[break][break]

Bright red blood falls with him in a cascade, specks of blood flying upwards.[break][break]

Then the slam into the water.[break][break]

The ocean water froths over with a great splash of white and foam. Then it stills, quiet, just the easy rhythm of the waves crashing against the rocks nearby. Red stains the water from below. Tempest does not come back to the surface.

"Damnit!" It didn't matter that victory was in their clutches. He wouldn't take it like this. Reaching into his pocket, Isaac fished out a new Pokeball and tossed it skywards. Out popped an Aerodactyl, her triumphant roar drowned out by the rush of MUGEN's engines. Isaac called after her, his voice trailing off along the jetstream. "Horus! Fly down there! Catch Temp!"[break][break]

He could only hope she'd heard.[break][break]

A heavy wingbeat brought Horus' craggy body into a meteoric descent. While a quick Tailwind spurred her along, she pulled her wings back instead of relying on it for long. Instead, her entire body pointed like the tip of a spear, allowing her to race past even MUGEN's thrusters. With eyes sharp and claws outstretched, she tried to grab Temp before the waters could take him.[break][break]

SPLOOSH. Only a shower of seaspray answered Horus' attempt.[break][break]

"Fuck, fuck, fuck . . . " MUGEN, who by now had long lost his dance partner, pulled to a stop. From atop his back, Isaac could see that Temp was nowhere to be seen. Horus hovered above his last known location, keeping an eye out for any movement beneath the murky shadows. A self-satisfied chuckle escaped MUGEN, and that was the last straw for Isaac. He leaped off of the Genesect's back, corkscrewing in midair to return him to his ball.[break][break]

Now he was falling without any easy exit routes. Good. That was where he wanted to be, anyway.[break][break]

With MUGEN handled, Isaac curled himself into a cannonball. All it would take was a good breach through the water's surface to let him get back to his search. He pushed through murky waters and clouds of billowing blood, holding his breath for as long as he possibly could. It was risky. He could walk on water, not breathe in it. However, he had no qualms taking such a risk if it meant he could stop Temp from being seized by the region's rip currents.

What Isaac Merlo fiinds under the water is almost peaceful, had it not been Tempest. Had it not been death, and blood, and other terrors that would haunt. Blood seeps from a large wound, fresh and ragged and glistening even here under the waves. It had been easy to miss before; hidden on Tempest's side as it was.[break][break]

Tempest himself floats backwards, dragged downward in a slow fall. Lips parted, eyes closed. Almost like he was asleep in bed, soft and warm. Not in the icy cold grip of the ocean. His hair has come loose of it's ponytail, fanning out around him. Light from above shimmers on the Lugia-Scale earrings, catches on his wedding band. A mask of comfort.[break][break]

Down, down, down....[break][break]

All Isaac needed to do was reach out and pull.

[attr="class","textbox"]Temp looked so peaceful. It was almost as if he was being laid to rest, all dolled up for a burial at sea. For a moment, Isaac felt awful for disturbing such a serene scene. He shook the doubt as quickly as it came. If he didn't intervene, Temp died, and that was unacceptable.[break][break]

Even after his post-recovery bulk, he was the smaller of the two. Temp's muscles were renowned, and no amount of avatarship could change Isaac's bad roll on the genetic dice. This was going to be an uphill battle, but it was one he forced himself to fight. With one last push, he lanced through the water, forcing himself past the natural rate of Temp's descent.[break][break]

He'd brace the man against his shoulder, leaning away from the billowing blood that flowed from his side. Fuck. That didn't look good. With his free hand, he began trailing his fingers through the water. Where they traveled, the water began to shimmer and sparkle. While Isaac couldn't just fix a wound of this magnitude, he could at least ease some of the pain and stem some of the bleeding.[break][break]

With both hands spent tending to Temp, he only had two legs to use for pushing two bodies through the water. The numbers didn't lie, and they spelled disaster for this endeavor. The surface of the water grew closer by the second, but so too did the pressure on his body and the strain on his lungs grow tighter. Would he breach the surface in time? Or would they both drown here, Isaac's insistence on saving Temp dragging them both into the abyss?[break][break]

No. Not again.[break][break]

Just as Isaac felt his resolve waver, the waters beneath him began to surge. A Surf raged beneath him, the rising tide sending him exploding out from the water. He felt the Pressure, warm and comforting, before he saw his patron's presence. "Sure took your sweet time showing up," Isaac wheezed, shooting Suicune a weary smile.[break][break]

He wasn't swimming across the waves anymore. Now he was standing atop them. Suicune kept the waters beneath his feet stilled as he rolled Temp off of his shoulder. From there, Isaac took a knee, supporting Temp against him best he could. If he could just see what was going on with this injury, maybe he could do something about it . . .

It was a slice, deep and ragged. Probably from a previous battle; a pokemon's claws or perhaps even a rough knife. Fresh, too, as if Tempest hadn't had time to get it taken care of before meeting Isaac Merlo in the skies.[break][break]

It's comforting to Tempest in it's own way. He lived with Cillian Quinn, so therefore he spent a lot of time around Lugia. Her Pressure was one he had grown used to. It had made him feel nervous and disjointed at first, as it was supposed to do, but now it only brought comfort.[break][break]

Temp chokes on the air, starting to cough water out of lungs and nose. He twitches, lightly, as the convulsion makes fresh rivulets of blood seep from the raw slide on his skin.[break][break]

"Cil?" Hopeful, relieved, he tries to pry his eyes open but the blinding sun obscures his vision of who holds him for the moment.

He would've tried harder to pull MUGEN back. But what else could he have done? Everyone involved, bar him, was hellbent on fighting.[break][break]

Isaac had the sinking feeling this wouldn't be the first time he faced this dilemma.[break][break]

Even when they breached, Isaac continued drawing from the shimmering waters below. He wished he was a proper medic, and not some glorified cut-cleaner. Maybe if he had hours to work with, he'd be able to knit it shut.[break][break]

He didn't. In fact, he had mere seconds. Already, Temp was starting to stir, asking after a name that filled Isaac with dread. Cillian Quinn, were he to see this, would have probably killed Isaac first, mutilated hid body second, hung the remains in Sootopolis as a reminder third, and maybe asked questions at the end. Even with the supernatural calm that Suicune had granted him, the mere thought of facing Cil again chilled his blood and turned his stomach.[break][break]

He wasn't here, though. Maybe, before he'd dyed his hair, Isaac could've passed for him in his youth. That ship had long sailed.[break][break]

"I'm sorry. It's just me." He knew he wasn't the one Temp wanted to see, as heartbreaking as that fact was. He knew Temp would never agree to go with him, no matter how badly it hurt. "But I'll bring you to him. Just let me patch you up first. Please."[break][break]

Would he truly brave such a deep-seated fear, just to help someone he worried so deeply about?[break][break]

Would Temp even give him that choice?

Isaac Merlo's voice is what draws him back in. The confusion he felt upon waking is parted, Isaac coming into focus with a stark clarify. He lulls, for a moment, not really understanding where he is or why the other is holding him. Why he's soaked. Why he's in pain.[break][break]

Then it all comes rushing in.[break][break]

Isaac is not his husband, the vision shape-shifting into the now-dark haired man. Snarling, Tempest doesn't follow the request. He grabs Isaac by the collar and uses what little strength he has to try and shove him away, to pull back; he almost falls off the wave platform that Suicune has made for him.[break][break]

He winces and presses a hand against his side, hissing, but Tempest's eyes stay locked on the other through the haze of pain.[break][break]

As his gaze flicks between Isaac and Suicune, there is a clear flash of hurt and betrayal that crosses his face.[break][break]

"Is that thing why you left us?" The pain is there, in his voice. Tempest shakes his head, wet hair whipping his cheeks.[break][break]

"You don't know what it's doing to you, Isaac! I've been studying these things, they're not good." A final plead to return, to make amends, for Isaac to join back into Rocket's fold. His blame having shifted from Isaac himself onto the legendary pokemon next to him. Tempest actually isn't sure what Suicune is, doesn't know it by name, but he knows enough to know it's one of the false gods that roam Hoenn's soil.[break][break]

That it has surely been poisoning Isaac.

It was too late. He put up no resistance as Temp shoved him away. All he could do was dredge up more shimmering water, a gentle tendril caressing Temp's wound. Even in the face of the physical relief it provided, Isaac wondered if anything could be done for his mental anguish.[break][break]

"No." His voice was firm, even as his own pain spread like cracks in the ice. "Suicune didn't find me until they brought me back from the brink of death, after your husband tried to kill me. All because I wouldn't sit back and let some admin turn someone I love into a human toy."[break][break]

The cracks deepened, then shattered. Isaac wore his anguish over Caleb Harcourt and Cillian Quinn on his sleeve. For all the powerful Pokemon backing him, Isaac was still that same small, helpless boy.[break][break]

"Maybe I don't know how all this works, or what Suicune's doing to me. But you don't know what Rocket's been doing to me, either." A plea for a plea. "I've been trying to be something I'm not for the people I love, and it's been tearing me to pieces. And for what? So we can be shipped off to die in some madman's war?"[break][break]

Who was Temp to speak of poisons and lies, when they were shackled to them at this very moment? Who used the promise of power to seduce the ambitious and the loyal more than Rocket? Who stole its adherents' independence and twisted them into its proxies? If Legendaries were false gods, Rocket was a cult of personality.[break][break]

"I can't keep doing this. Please."
